Exploring the intersections between IA and IxD

Navneet Nair is a frequent poster on the IxDG Discussion List. This time he posts a question about how to organize a specific set of information. In doing so he set up two things for me to comment on.

  1. That there are clear lines possible to make between IA and IxD
  2. That an IxDer has some great points-of-view that can help answer findability questions

Ubiquitous Computing ethics by Adam Greenfield

Adam Greenfield’s article on Ubiquitous Computing ethics on Boxes and Arrows is a very good start for the UX community to be thinking about Ubicomp and the ramifications to the overall environment we can or don’t create.

A real UX Conference

I had an opportunity to convert a purely virtual relationship into a real one last night, when Julie Stanford of Slided Bread Design, and I got together for dinner. She was visiting from the left coast (in the US that means the Pacific Coast) and she asked if I was interested in getting together.

It was a great meal, filled with banter about design and what not. Then I turned to topic of discussion towards conferences and what would it take to create an IxD conference. Julie’s reply was interesting and I think worth bringing out into the world. As UX practitioners how many of us ONLY do IxD? or for that matter usability, or IA, or CHI? Julie basically said that none of the current organizational conferences speak to her needs as a complete digital designer.

Where are you? I’m hiring … come find me!

So here I am. I’m a successful designer/design manager working a small and growing internet application service provider. My career in this company and the effect that I’m having there are both growing at a nice pace. It’s a small design team and to be honest I don’t think I would want it much bigger. But one day I come to work and my team of 3 becomes a team of 1, ME. So now I am scrambling and the experience gives me a lot of fodder for thinking about hiring, interviewing, and yes, organizging.

What is it about digital design? What happened to us?

I admit it. I’m on a crusade to keep “Design” in “interaction design”. I think more than anything else this is why I want IxDG to succeed. I think “Design” (some call it “big D design”) is one of the most wonderful legacies and processes that we can keep alive in the world. The old design schools of Europe and the contemporary movements in architecture, furniture, fashion, interiors, visual, etc. are ours for the taking.

What’s interesting is that this week, 2 separate dialogs with separate bloggers made it clear to me that digital design is somehow not following the other disciplines of design in some ways. Kevin Cheng of OK-Cancel and I had a back and forth IM about his latest guest blogger, Don Norman. Luke Wroblewski of Functioning Form has now 2 pieces (I think the 2nd is inspired off of our e-mail discussion. Luke?) that discuss the state of digital design and maybe we need to balance our discussion about organization with a cross-functional collaborative discourse around philosophical movements. Then this very weekend, there is a heated discussion on my very own IxDG Discussion List.

Disenfranchisement Through Technology

Ok, I’m interrupting the flow of things a bit. I had this whole idea lined up about “digital design” and the lack of commune in its sphere and NOW I’m just pissed so here ya go …

My vote doesn’t count. It hasn’t counted for a long time. It hasn’t counted for so many people this all important election year.
