iPod Touch & iPhone (Nokia N95 & Motorola QM9) = Infotainicator

Having looked in my hobbying mostly at this classification of ulitility experience in the living room, it seems it has arrived even better in the mobile space.

What class is that? Infotainicator
INFOrmation
EnterTAINment
CommunICATOR

I think the Media Center as an attempt to do this in the living room is a huge failure because it never REALLY addresses the change in interaction criterior and thus create a new interaction design experience within the space. They basically glommed on TV functionality and said … Go!

Devices like TiVo, Slimbox, and AppleTv make similar mistakes in that realm.

But in mobile there are companies like Apple, Nokia and Motorola that are taking real steps towards making these all-in-one devices really work for their multi-ple intended purposes and in the right contexts in which they will be used.

Obviously, the iPhone is a clear champion in this regard because it is the most revolutionized in that the entire system blows up the very models of all of these previous formats. There are very few previous patterns used that have not been completely rethought to address the needs of mobile. There is very little “glomming” here.

The iPod touch also takes on this space in a similar way.

If you look at Barbara Ballard’s recent piece on Posture and mobile devices you’ll see a really big reason why iPhone/Touch succeed where others like the HTC Touch and Motorola and Nokia are still far behind.

If you don’t actively address the posture context of mobile devices and you don’t design from the ground up thinking about the interruptions that exist in mobile use, then you are missing major components of the user experience design of mobile device application eco-systems.

A little teaser about my class that starts this week

There is no page
Taken from the UIE sponsored Web Application Summit, Jan. 2007.

As I think about the 6 week course I’m starting this week, I’m getting really excited about the opportunity to run a small studio class on 2 of my favorite topics: interaction design & rich internet applications.

To cut to the chase, it is not too late to sign up.

But what is really exciting is why. I had the privilege of being invited to speak at both UI11 and the Web Application Summit in 2006 & 2007 respectively for the fine folks at UIE. Bill Scott & I created a full day workshop on the topic of DESIGNING Powerful Web Applications.

The content that both Bill and I provided is being supplemented in two different angles to fit this new format. Besides the seminars and exercises we came up with and run at UI11 I’ll be adding the following components:

  • There will be a studio with crits
  • Reading assignments from general interaction design literature
  • Weekly assignments of RIA literature from the blogsphere

These are things that just can’t happen in a 1 day workshop and I want to make sure that from a continuing education perspective, people are given the opportunity to expand learn at this level. This is what I understand to be the reason that the SmartExperience.org project was launched.

So please join me and the other students who have already registered. We’ll be in class on Wed. the 5th. I know it is short notice, but I really do believe that for anyone who is being asked to add a new level of interactivity to their current work, whether in desktop, mobile, or web applications, this course will bring huge value to you.

So the reward for reading this, is a discount code. Get 10% off your registration by using the discount code “FOSSE”.
