“Innovation has nothing to do with how many R&D dollars you have. When Apple came up with the Mac, IBM was spending at least 100 times more on R&D. It's not about money. It's about the people you have, how you're led, and how much you get it.” - Steve Jobs

Working With the Disconnected

Ever feel like you live in an alternate universe? Everything you read on and offline tells you, we are living in a beautiful age of technological innovation and true belief in design Then you walk into your offices conference room, and its like walking into the Matrix.

So like Neo, you spend your days “taking out your neighbors garbage (classic Smith voice), but at night well, you write blog entries, and scour the blogsphere for signs of hope as you just wait for someone to pluck you from the machine and drop you into the land of BDTU, where Businesses use Design and Technology in a symbiotic ballet to achieve User bliss.

Of course, it is also just as likely that the blogsphere is the matrix and everyone else is living in reality but that would destroy my personal utopian world view. What also contradicts that 2nd hopeless scenario is that it seems that within the blogsphere are these mysterious places that are living the “utopian BDTU life. Just a few of the companies that get lauded from time to time for their mixed results for applying BDTU moral codes are:

  • Apple – Well, ya gotta start with the obvious one
  • Microsoft – Well, to be honest, there is argument here, but ya really do have to be impressed with what they are doing lately in some of their areas of influence.
  • Google – I have heard UI horror stories here, and their tendency towards the purely quantitative, but man! look at those results.
  • IDEO – like Apple is hailed as one of our great g-d totems.
  • Yahoo – I know Yahoo has been acquiring some great companies that do this work, and in their own work do follow some line o BDTU.

There are obviously others, but I thought Id keep the list small to a few select items, so our totem pole doesnt topple over.

Just some questions to the masses Any non-consultancies (I know I included one in my list) who you think belong on this list that are NOT on the west coast of the US, and not over-hyped beyond their real results? Just curious.

So if I assume for a moment that Im the sane one, locked inside the matrix for 8-10 hours a day what can we do to have the spirit of Zion (ooooo!!!) encroach further into the Matrix. Maybe Smith was partially right to try convert the Matrix into his line of thinking instead of rebel against it from the outside like those in Zion. But how?

Id love to hear peoples success stories of cultural change from the world of Dilbert (the Matrix), to the world of Apple (Zion).
